AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin-based Whole Foods Market is gearing up for a major expansion, hoping to triple the number of stores it has now.
Co-chief executive officer Walter Robb told Bloomberg Business News that the company has a goal of 1,000 stores.
Robb said that Whole Foods is looking to smaller cities and to places in large cities with limited access to fresh produce.
The strategy is already in motion.
Next May, Whole Foods plans to open its first store in Detroit.
The company has recently opened stores in smaller cities like Des Moines, Iowa, and Wichita, Kan.
