AUSTIN (KXAN) - We all know competition for jobs is tough. That's especially true for a company like Google.
The Internet and software corporation is known for having a fun and hip corporate culture.
For the first time the company gave KXAN reporters a behind-the-scenes look at their offices, located at MoPac Boulevard and State Highway 183.
When Google Austin moved into the North Austin building in 2007, it turned a typical office space into something colorful and creative.
"It's Googly, we made the floor Googly," said Google Austin's director of commerce sales, Jay Remley.
About 200 people work at Google Austin, most of them in sales and marketing. They're surrounded by windows, bright colors and a uniquely Austin flavor -- including an Airstream trailer as the front desk.
"All of our conference rooms are named after musicians, a lot of the themes within the conference rooms are LPs and 8-tracks and the history of the music industry," said Remley.
Multiple cafes offer employees free, healthy food and drinks. There's a piano lounge, a massage chair room, art boards, and hangout areas with pool tables, ping pong, board games and shuffleboard.
"It feels like they're at home, right? We work hard but we have fun," said Remley.
Perhaps that's why Fortune ranked Google No. 1 on its list of great places to work.
"I'm really excited to see that. I know my dad would be super happy to read that," said Google Austin commerce associate Anup Parikh.
Google credits the ranking to hiring great people, offering good opportunities and developing a corporate culture where people want to work.
But with all the perks, you might wonder how does work get done?
"We hire the best and the brightest and they're self-motivated and we're all focused on goals and results and so they know what we need to get done and we leave it up to them to balance that time," said Remley.
Of course a work environment that attractive would get a lot of attention. In fact, Google says each year it gets two million applications. And last year hired 7,000 people around the world.
"If there's any place to grow it's a company like this," said Parikh.
And at Google they take this job and love it.
