AUSTIN (KXAN) - In the wake of the race car crash in Daytona Beach that injured more than two dozen fans, KXAN News wanted to know what's in place to protect fans visiting Austin's Circuit Of the Americas.
According to CoTA, the 3.4-mile track has special safety fencing and barriers to prevent vehicles from leaving the racing circuit in the event there is an accident on the track.
The venue installed TecPro Barriers and Geobrugg Debris Frencing -- CoTA was the first venue in the United States to install the TechPro Barriers.
The TecPro system is made to absorb 40 percent more shock than tire barriers.
Engineers say the Geobrugg fence is made of high tensile wire mesh and is three to four times stronger than conventional chain link mesh.
If there is a medical emergency, the track has a 5,500-square foot Medical Center located right next to the pit area which can provide trauma care for injured drivers or patrons.
