AUSTIN (KXAN) - Christmas is right around the corner and one popular gift requested by individuals from around the world can only be found right here in Austin.
Texas historic maps are a hot item on the gift list, keeping the Texas General Land Office extremely busy.
"The oldest document dates back to the year 1720, which is almost 300 years and it's our job they last another 300 years," said James Harkins of the Texas General Land Office.
A variety of maps can be found in the vault: state, city, county, republic of Texas and even good old Austin back in 1887.
"You think how big the capitol building is and how it towers over the rest of the city," Harkins said. "During November and December, there is a Christmas rush because these are such unique Christmas presents, we definitely see a spike."
Of course, the original maps never leave the room. A copy of the map requested is made and shipped off for just $25 to $30, the money goes to help preserve Texas history.
To physically preserve the maps that are hundreds of years old and extremely fragile, the room is kept at a constant 65 degrees and 45 percent humidity.
