AUSTIN (KXAN) - Travis County officials have seen a drop in West Nile cases since the end of August.

Officials briefed the Health and Human Services committee at Austin City Hall on Tuesday night.

A total of 90 cases have been detected in Travis County this year, but only a few have been confirmed since the end of August according to data released Tuesday.

There has also been a downward trend in West Nile showing up in tested mosquito pools. During the week of Aug. 20, 16 pools were found to be carrying the virus.

Since Aug. 24 only seven pools have tested positive in 31 zip codes around Austin.

City staff continue to monitor human cases and weather conditions to assess the need for additional control measures, but officials said they do not think that ground or aerial spraying will be necessary for Travis County.

Tuesday, though, the 54th confirmed death due to West Nile in Texas was confirmed in El Paso.

In August, the Center for Disease Control called the 2012 West Nile outbreak one of the worst in history .
