AUSTIN (KXAN) - A cleanup effort, 14-years in the making, aimed at honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brought hundreds of volunteers and government officials together Saturday.

Volunteers gathered at J.J. Seabrook Park to beautify the street bearing Dr. King Jr.'s name, cleaning the area on MLK from Airport Blvd. to Springdale Rd.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and State Rep. Dawnna Dukes (D-Austin) hosted the event, sponsored by United Way.

Event organizers say there were over 250 volunteers participating in today's cleanup efforts, recruited from their Hands On Central Texas program.

This is the 14th year for the annual United Way MLK "Cleanup Day."
