Strong storms may bring severe weather

Flash flood watch in effect Monday night

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Central Texas will see scattered showers and a few thunderstorms through Monday evening, with the possibility of strong to severe storms late Monday night through Tuesday morning. 2-5 inches of rain is possible, with isolated higher totals.

A powerful, but slow moving upper level storm system will move into the state, increasing the chances of rain and thunderstorms in our area. Severe storms and flash flooding will be possible, especially Monday night as the system and a Pacific cold front move closer.

The Storm Prediction Center has included Central Texas, including all of the Austin metro area, in a moderate risk area for severe storms. The threats include large hail, damaging winds 60 mph or higher and heavy rainfall. The possibility of a tornado cannot be ruled out, either, as the system arrives. Make sure your weather radio is on and has fresh batteries.

Some of the storms may trail along the slow-moving boundary of the storm front, and these are the ones that are going to produce the heaviest rainfall. Austin does have a flash flood watch in effect Monday night until Tuesday at noon. KXAN News' in-house computer is projecting more than 2 inches of rainfall for most of the area, with more than three inches from Austin northward, and a few spots flirting with up to four inches or more.  The National Weather Service is projecting 2-5 inch totals, with isolated amounts up to 7 inches.

Stay tuned to KXAN News for further weather updates.
