Trail of Lights returning to Zilker

AUSTIN (KXAN) - After a two-year absence, Austin's Trail of Lights will return to Zilker Park in December with new attractions and events.

The revival of the holiday tradition was announced Thursday by a partnership that includes the RunTex Carrozza Foundation, ForeFront Austin and the H-E-B grocery chain.

“The Trail of Lights is an iconic celebration of authentic Austin,” said Paul Carrozza, founder of the RunTex Carrozza Foundation. “So many people have asked for this, wanting this tradition to be brought back to Austin. 

"Trail of Lights is a piece of Austin’s history and a platform bringing together Central Texans to participate in a vibrant event and advance the community. Great things happen when we come together to celebrate.”

On Dec. 16, the Trail of Lights, Powered by H-E-B, will kick off in Zilker Park. The festivities will run through Dec. 23. 

This year’s events include numerous performers — dancers, singers, musicians and carolers — with themes every night, including Heritage Night, School Spirit Night and Military Appreciation. Food and drink will be available, including hot chocolate, cider and bites from local food trailers.

Trail of Lights has been an Austin tradition since its creation in 1965, when it was titled “Yule Fest.”  In 1992 the cherished event became Trail of Lights.
