AUSTIN (KXAN) - Thursday, the Trail Foundation is closer to its $5 million goal for a new project called "The Boardwalk."
H-E-B donated $250,000 to the foundation that focuses on improving the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake.
Austin City Council will vote later this month to authorize the contract for the new project. Once passed, a new modern trail would extend out into the waters of Lady Bird Lake between South Congress Avenue and Lakeshore Park.
The project will bring the trail around the lakeshore full circle.
"There will be $3 million toward the trail completion project, also known as The Boardwalk," said Susan Rankin, spokeswoman for the Trail Foundation, "and another $2 million for other vital trail enhancements."
"I think it's great, I think that would be fabulous," said a woman out for a stroll along the lake.
The foundation hopes to break ground in September. The Boardwalk project is expected to take 18 months to complete.
