AUSTIN (KXAN) - After celebrating Halloween and collecting mountains of candy there is an incentive for kids to trade in their sugary treats.
Several dentists in Austin are taking part in the Halloween Candy Buy Back program.
The program offers kids the opportunity to switch their extra Halloween candy for cash or coupons. Dentists have a choice of giving cash or other items for the candy, such as coupons, toothbrushes, creative exchanges. They partner with local businesses to give away coupons for food, services or goods.
Dentists can give away Hygiene Kits or set up an Opportunity Prize--each child gets a ticket per pound of candy for an opportunity drawing to win special prizes.
The candy is then shipped off to troops serving overseas via "Operation Gratitude."
