AUSTIN (KXAN) - Police are investigating a break-in at the Town Lake Animal Center.
The center, currently being run by Austin Pets Alive , notified police Sunday morning around 8:30 am of the break-in.
Sources familiar with the burglary say a window was smashed in and an undetermined amount of donation money was stolen.
In a statement obtained by KXAN, Austin Pets Alive said:
Last year, the city moved into a bigger center to house more animals and turned over part of its old site - the Town Lake Animal Center - to the rescue group Austin Pets Alive.
Austin Pets Alive loses the lease at its main headquarters later this spring and wants to take over the entire Town Lake site. The city's animal services staff said they need part of the site for overflow from its new center.
"We lost ground since we've moved into the new shelter," said one volunteer from the new Austin Animal Center. "Dogs that could be saved with some amount of training and work are being euthanized."
"We've got to be able to be able to move our entire operation to one location," one APA supporter said in opposition.
Police do not have any suspects in the incident which is believed to have happened overnight.
Austin Pets Alive says they could use your help with donations to replace the stolen ones. If you have time to volunteer they say that would also be a great help.
