AUSTIN (KXAN) - More than 2,000 people showed up Sunday night at the Central Texas Veterans Celebration to say "thank you" to those who have served the nation.

Everyone stood together as playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" kicked off the night. The event continued with musical performances and a salute to the heroes.

The audience heard the story of former U.S. Army soldier and prisoner of war, Jessica Lynch, who was held in captivity in Iraq for nine days.

"For nine excruciating and painful days I laid in bed in the care of our enemies in hopes that I would not die and in hopes that I would one day see my family again, and one day I would be rescued and not forgotten," Lynch told the crowd.

Gov. Rick Perry took to the stage along with U.S. Sen John Cornyn, giving their thoughts on why Veterans Day is so important.

"In Texas, we will never forget," Perry said. "We will never forget those who gave every last measure of devotion on the battlefield, in Texas. We will always remember the courage of the men and women in uniform and do everything to help heal them."

The event was hosted by Serve Our City , an Austin-based group raising awareness and providing services for veterans.
