AUSTIN (KXAN) - Two high school sweethearts who were killed while crossing the street in South Austin were staring at a cellphone when they were hit by a passing pickup truck . That's according to a memo mailed to the Austin mayor and City Council Friday.
Police also say Josh Milton, 17, and Melodie Hewitt, 15, were not in the crosswalk at South First and Thelma streets just south of William Cannon Drive when they were struck.
Milton died at the scene on Dec. 27, and Hewitt died four days later.
Friends and family have been demanding the city add a flashing light for pedestrians at the intersection.
The city has decided to go ahead and add one because it's on a busy street next to a school and walkers don't have a lot of time to cross.
