KYLE, Texas (KXAN) - A squabble between teenagers turned into criminal charges after one girl took to the internet to ridicule the other.
Kyle Police have charged 18-year-old Amber Harvey with online impersonation after she posted the victim’s address and phone number online.
But it was the manner in which the information was posted that had the victim’s family worried for their safety.
“We were worried about people showing up at our door,” said the victim’s mother Kristine. “My daughter checks our door multiple times every evening.”
According to an arrest affidavit, Harvey posted the information on 4chan.org, an online bulletin board which features many postings that deal with sex.
Police say Harvey offered sexual favors to anyone who would harass the victim.
“Do whatever you can to destroy her, and I will do anything you ask.... She needs to (expletive) die," said one posting from Harvey according to the affidavit.
Not long after the post, the victim began receiving text messages.
“Hateful messages calling her the worst kind of names imaginable,” said Kristine.
The two girls had been in an argumentative back and forth exchange for weeks according to Kristine. However, nothing came close to the level of the postings.
“My daughter had to have her cell phone number changed immediately.”
The victim also received texts from people notifying her about the posting. She was able to grab screen shots which provided police evidence.
“They are teenagers, they joke around, but in all reality, it is against the law,” said Detective Pedro Carrasco with Kyle PD.
Carrasco says the post became criminal the minute the victim’s personal information was used without her permission.
Even Harvey seemed to acknowledge she had gone too far according to Kristine.
“Within two hours she sent my daughter an e-mail for the postings and an apology,” she said. “But the damage was done.”
