AUSTIN (KXAN) - After releasing more than 11,000 Asian grass carp into Lake Austin over the summer, officials are dumping another 6,000 into the lake on Tuesday to help cut down on the hydrilla.

Hydrilla is an invasive plant that grows in the water and can grow to the surface and create dense mats.

This stocking is intended to replace fish that die to maintain a target population of 50 fish per acre of hydrilla, a rate that has controlled hydrilla in the past.

With the new number of fish, the lake will be stocked with around 40,000 Asian carp.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department documented that hydrilla coverage decreased slightly to 560 acres in September.
