AUSTIN (KXAN) - Several people in South Austin were back in their apartments Wednesday morning after a bizarre incident forced them to evacuate overnight.

The incident began when police were called to investigate why a man walking around carrying a sword just before midnight in an apartment complex on Teri Road.

Police tracked the man down to an apartment. After he refused to come out and threatened to use a weapon on officers, nearby apartments were evacuated and the police SWAT unit was called.

Officers attempt to talk him out of the home with out success so they used another tactic.

"Some secondary devices were deployed inside of the residence and the suspect did come out and was taken into custody without incident about 1:30 a.m.," said police Lt. Frank Dixon.

No one was hurt.  The man may not face any charges.  Police believe he is suffering from a mental illness.
