AUSTIN (KXAN) - A SWAT standoff in Northwest Austin ended nearly 6 1/2 hours after police first responded to a man threatening to commit suicide.
Police arrested the man at 7:25 a.m. after using distractionary devices to be able to go in and get him. Mental health professionals are evaluating him, and he may be charged with aggravated family violence.
Crews had been out in the 6800 block of Thorncliffe Drive since around 1 a.m. Monday.
When they arrived, the officers said the man showed his weapons and asked officers to call in the SWAT team.
SWAT crews went out to the area and had the home surrounded, evacuating residents and telling everyone else to stay inside.
They talked to the man both face-to-face and over the phone, but he refused to come out.
The scene has been cleared, and residents are allowed to return home.
Officials are not releasing the man's name or his reason for wanting to kill himself.
