AUSTIN (KXAN) - A man accused of reaching speed of 90 mph while attempting to evade police early Sunday is charged with aggravated assault on an officer after ramming his car into the officer's cruiser on the grounds on an East Austin church, a court document says.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit released Monday, Joshua Jenkins, 24, was driving erratically in the 1800 block of East 51st just after midnight on Sunday when officer attempted to stop him.
The document says that Jenkins sped up, then turned left on Old Manor Road. Along the way, he darted into the lane for oncoming traffic while ignoring stop signs and traffic signal. At one point, his speed was estimated at 90 mph and he almost crashed head on with a taxi, the document says.
The officer followed Jenkins 4700 block of Delores Avenue where the car went into a grassy area of a church.
As the officer drove up to Jenkins' car, Jenkins slammed his car into the patrol car, the document says. The officer said he feared for his safety.
Jenkins then drove off, but was stopped by other officer several blocks away and was arrested.
Aggravated assault on a police officer is a first-degree felony.
