'Super Street' aims to relieve traffic

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Traffic is becoming a growing problem across Austin, and it's being felt in areas surrounding the city.

But in just a matter of days there will be some relief for people heading to and from Bastrop. It's called a "Super Street."

On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Transportation will roll out a new design where SH 71 meets FM 973.

Cars will no longer be able to make a left turn onto SH 71. They'll be re-routed and forced to turn right; making a u-turn at the next light.

"Benefits of this design concept are tremendous," said Greg Malatek, Austin District Engineer. "The design will help reduce delay and congestion at this intersection by more than 40 percent, which makes the roadway safer for everyone."

Steven Stackpole, drives through the intersection of SH 71 and FM 973 almost everyday. Over the years he's noticed an increase of not only traffic but accidents as well at that intersection.

"At 5 o' clock I don't even come out here," said Stackpole. "Over the years it has gotten busier and busier because of the growing population out here."
