AUSTIN (KXAN) - Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for a Texas State University student who was shot to death in the Avery Ranch subdivision in Northwest Austin.

Friends and family filled the chapel to pay their respects to 23-year-old Enrique Recio and his family.

"I wouldn't be where I am right now as far as school, having the friends I have, being the way I am if it wasn't for my brother," Enrique's brother, Victor Recio told the crowd. "He taught me everything."

He was a computer science major who graduated from Westwood High School.

According to Austin police, Recio crashed his car on Avery Ranch Boulevard early Friday morning. He somehow ended up in front of Fred Yazdi's home.

Yazdi's wife heard something outside and told police Recio was under her car. When Yazdi, 47, went to check it out, he told Recio several times not to run. According to court documents, Yazdi warned Recio if he ran he would kill him.

Recio started running away and that's when Yazdi shot him three times with a 40 caliber pistol -- in the chest, hip and leg.

Friends at the funeral were full of grief and confusion.

"What possessed that guy to murder our friend? I mean, no one should be taken away like that," said Coco Vargas, a friend of Enrique's.

"I just think if I were in that same situation I probably would have done that same thing. I probably would have run." said friend Jordan Raymond. "And is it fair to be shot when you're fleeing?"

The memorial of balloons and flowers is expanding outside Yazdi's home on Staked Plaines Drive.
