AUSTIN (KXAN) - A University of Texas student is accused of using computer program to overwhelm the campus' website used to sign up for classes, which caused a crash that prevented other from enrolling in classes last spring.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit released Monday, 19-year-old Garret Ross Phillips, a UT junior, was able to force a "denial of service" to a university website using a program called "High Orbiting Ion Cannon." The program is designed to overload a website with fake visitors, which results in a shutdown.
The affidavits said that Phillips caused the crash on April 27 and that police were able to link the attack to him by tracing it to his computer address.
Philips was arrested and bonded out by Tuesday afternoon. He is charged with breach of computer security, which is punishable by a term in a state jail.
