AUSTIN (KXAN) - Sunday morning's early morning thunderstorms produced thousands of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in the area, some captured by our viewers’ cameras.
The thunderstorms were highly electrified, and the lightning bolts struck trees, towers, electrical poles and even the State Capitol. Viewers in South Austin reported lightning strikes continued for more than an hour.
Austin Energy reported numerous power outages and said the storms were the most damaging to their electrical infrastructure in recent memory.
As of the early Sunday night newscast, only 30 customers were without power. A total of 11 transformers were damaged during the storm.
More storms formed over the Hill Country Sunday night, and even more rain and thunderstorms are expected this week.
