AUSTIN (KXAN) - Local health officials are offering free and confidential HIV and STD testing Wednesday in conjunction with National HIV Testing Day.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 out of 5 people living with HIV nationwide is unaware of their status.
Early HIV diagnosis is critical so that people who are infected can fully benefit from available life-saving treatments.
Currently, almost 40 percent of people with HIV are not diagnosed until they have already developed AIDS. That can be up to 10 years after they first become infected with the virus.
The Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department is offering rapid HIV test results for walk-ins, and it's all free from 1 p.m. to 7p.m. at the Rosewood-Zaragosa Gym at 2800 Webberville Road.
