Police investigate deadly stabbing

AUSTIN (KXAN) - An unusual series of events on Saturday night led police to a stabbing victim. On Monday, Austin Police Department named a suspect in the case.

Austin police officers were completing a driving-while-intoxicated stop near the 4500 block of Oltorf Street around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday when another car drove into a nearby gate.

Officers immediately went to the crash and discovered the driver was seriously injured, then later determined the injuries were from a stabbing during a fight.

The man had been stabbed several times in a parking lot of the High Point Village Apartments, located at 2400 Wickersham Lane .

The man was rushed to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he later died. Authorities said they are ruling the death a homicide.

A friend said the victim's name was Randal Wells, 22, and said the fight was about a woman.

Late Monday, police identified a man wanted for questioning in the death of Wells. He is Hector Ramirez Lopez Hugo, 23.

Hugo is described as:

• Hispanic
• 5 feet 10 inches tall
• weighing 180 pounds
• stocky build
• short black hair
• hazel eyes
   

Hugo is believed to be driving a 2004 silver or grey Dodge Stratus SE with Texas plate number CY2K476.

Wells's death is the 10th homicide of the year.

The case is being investigated by APD Homicide Unit.
