AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Souper Bowl of Caring Central Texas is collecting donations from local organizations and businesses to support the Capital Area Food Bank . All of the donations will go towards releiving local hunger.

So far more than 677,139 pounds of food and $145,998 have been donated.

The campaign has set a goal to collect enough donations to equal 1 million meals. Community members can get involved by purchasing a pre-packaged bag of food or make a cash donation to any area H-E-B, Central Market or Randalls. Area residents who live in a scouting district will also have the option of donating at their doorstep.

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national youth-led movement made up of community organizations and individuals. Texas has the second highest rate of childhood hunger in the country. In an effort to change those statistics, the Souper Bowl of Caring has collected more than $81 million since the organization started in 1990.

“As people across the country watch the Giants take on the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, there is tremendous opportunity to harness this energy and direct it to caring for people who are hungry in the community through Souper Bowl of Caring,” said Tracy Bender, president and CEO of Souper Bowl of Caring. “

We may not know who will win the game, but local charities can win big if everyone will give generously to help our neighbors in need. ”
