New cycling gym getting plugged into technology

AUSTIN (KXAN) - What you eat. What you think. What your kids say. A lot of it is out there for the world to see on Facebook and Twitter these days.

Now fitness companies are making it easy for people to share their workouts with friends.

Nike led the way with a popular running app that allows athletes to track and share mileage with others on social media sites.

CYC, a new indoor cycling center near the University of Texas, is about to be plugged into similar fitness technology. Their stationary spin bikes will soon be equipped with wireless Internet capabilities that will track distance and calories burned.

Members will be able to share their accomplishments on Facebook.

"It definitely adds a level of competition," said Ali Christoph.

The professional soccer player likes the thought of comparing workouts with fellow teammates and expects the social media aspect will keep them more accountable for not skipping out on class.

"Part of having that data we think is helpful for context in your workouts," said Stephen Nitkin, CYC Founder and CEO.

The technology will also enable cyclists to compete in virtual races with other athletes at other CYC gym across the country.

"I think people want to start something and finish something," said Nitkin. "That's a big part of what we're doing."

In addition to tracking and sharing workout information, riders are also donating money to charities at the same time.

For every mile, a few cents will be donated to one of three non-profits of their choice. The Sustainable Food Center, Marathon Kids and the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
