Smaller bonus for RRISD superintendent

School board concerned about TAKS test scores

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - The Round Rock School board met until early Friday morning to discuss the superintendent's progress.

There were concerns he wasn't meeting all of the goals laid out by the board.

Twice a year the superintendent is evaluated - and based on that evaluation he receives a bonus. Typically the fall evaluation is done earlier in the year but due to a full schedule by the school board it didn't take place until Thursday night.

The board decided to award Dr. Jesus Chavez a $5,600 bonus for his work. He could have received $10,000 but the board felt TAKS test scores are not meeting the goals they had set forth for Chavez.

There was some thought last night the board was going to take action on his contract - but that item did not come up.

Overall the board wanted to make sure Chavez's goals were in line with what the board expects - and for the most part they said they are pleased.

“We have some questions for him and we are holding him accountable, just like the teachers hold their students accountable and we need to see some issues addressed that make sure we are ready for the new standards and new testing,” said Charles Chadwell, Round Rock School Board President

Dr. Chavez's contract was extended in March until 2014.

He did not comment after Thursday night’s board meeting.
