AUSTIN (KXAN) - Capitol Metro is experiencing record ridership during this year’s South By Southwest festival.
The transportation agency said MetroRail ridership for the interactive and film portion of SXSW surpassed 2012 numbers by nearly 7,000 occupants, with around 20,000 riders.
On Monday, CapMetro operated an additional train beyond the final departure to carry 110 passengers still waiting on the platform.
Midday frequency continues on Friday along the rail lines and Saturday service begins at 10 a.m.
To avoid downtown congestion, several bus routes were detoured to Guadalupe and Lavaca streets. The change came after noticing delays during past events, like Formula 1.
CapMetro was recording a 29 percent reduction in driver reported schedule delays from last year’s SXSW event.
Preliminary numbers along bus routes, show late night buses have been popular. Extra buses were even added to accommodate the demand.
