AUSTIN (KXAN) - A lightning bolt on Lake Travis early Sunday morning proves lightning does not always strike the tallest object in the area.

The ReportIt photo by KXAN viewer Sherrie MacAllister is a rare one, capturing a lightning strike directly on the lake surface, despite the much higher terrain of Hippie Hollow, and homes at even higher elevations, visible on the right side of the photograph.

This is a good example of why boaters and swimmers should be out of the water during thunderstorms.

The second photo was taken a little earlier, as Saturday night’s thunderstorms approached the Lake Travis area.
