AUSTIN (KXAN) - Each year millions of children in America struggle with hunger -- and the problem is growing right here in Austin.
"It's heartbreaking to think of any child not having food," said Baty Elementary School principal Mary Patterson.
The Junior League of Austin is trying to change that -- one child at a time.
Every Friday for the entire year, kids at Baty and Hillcrest Elementary schools will take home a bag full of healthy treats.
As many as 250 volunteers will pack backpacks full of food for 1,500 students every week.
"Over 96-percent of the children receive food through the National School Lunch Program," said Junior League president Cathy Mchorse, "but we know that they go home and may be hungry on the weekends -- that's where we step in to fill the gap."
The program cost $250,000 a year to run.
Those who would like to help can find more information at the Junior League of Austin website.
