AUSTIN (KXAN) - The U.S. Postal Service on Monday unveiled the stamp commemorating the life of author O. Henry, who made his home in Austin and has an elementary school named in his honor.
The "forever" stamp that bears the author's likeness was officially released at the O. Henry Museum at 409 E. Fifth St. where buyers could have it postmarked with a cancelation stamp.
The release coincided with O. Henry's 150th birthday.
O. Henry was born William Sydney Porter and his short stories are known for their wit, clever wordplay and surprise endings.
But before he became an author, O. Henry had something of a checkered past. According to his biography, O. Henry was arrested in 1896 on charges of embezzlement in Houston. After being released on bond,he skipped town, traveling first to New Orleans and then to Honduras.
He finally returned to stand trial and ended up serving time before his career as a writer blossomed.
He struggled with alcoholism and died at age 47 in 1910.
