AUSTIN (KXAN) - The driver of the 18-wheeler who died in the fiery crash on Interstate 35 on Tuesday veered to avoid a car that was changing lanes and crashed into a concrete bridge pillar, police said Wednesday.

The driver was identified as 52-year-old Reginald D. Porch. He died at the scene. The wreck, which happened about 11:30 a.m., closed down a stretch of the freeway near the Slaughter Creek bridge south of downtown for several hours.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Christopher Bishop said TxDOT engineers were sent out to check the integrity of the bridge, declared safe after nearly six hours.

It reopened, along with the northbound lanes of the interstate, at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the car that veered was cooperating with investigators, police said. It was not known if any charges will be filed.
