Police investigate suspicious death

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A passerby reported seeing a dead man under the MoPac bridge just after 1 p.m. on Sunday. Austin police were investigating it as a a suspicious death.

On Monday, Austin police identified the victim as James Lavon McQuaig, 27.

On Sunday, Officer Veneza Aguinaga said details appeared to indicate the death of the man was suspicious. She could not elaborate on what made the death suspicious.

"Because of where the body is located we cannot determine the manner of death," said Aguinaga.  "There are some indications that it could be a suspicious death."

Homicide investigators and crime scene technicians spent more than three hours at the scene taking pictures and collecting evidence. They could also not tell whether or not the man was homeless.

This case is being investigated by the APD Homicide Unit. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text "Tip 103" + your message to CRIMES.

Those leaving tips may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 if a tip leads to an arrest or charges being filed.
