KXAN (AUSTIN) - The city of Austin has now announced its plans for the third annual Austin's New Year (A.N.Y.) The city will host A.N.Y. at Auditorium Shores on Monday night from 5 p.m. to 10:30. City leaders put out the invitation Thursday morning during a news conference at City Hall.
"We encourage the community to bring out their lawn chairs and blankets and ring in the new year in Austin style," said Laura Esparza, a manager with Austin Parks and Recreation.
The event is designed to be a safe option for celebrating. A.N.Y. is alcohol-free yet full of entertainment. It's also free of cost to the public. Dozens of performers will take to three stages, and it's the only place in Austin to see a legal display of fireworks for New Year's Eve.
The entertainment line-up includes live music from five Austin bands, plus dozens more. The night also features art, a light show, and culturally diverse performances. Thursday morning at City Hall the Austin Chinese Arts Association gave a preview of one of their dances planned for Monday night.
Police Chief Art Acevedo also spoke, saying officers will be out in force New Year's Eve. Acevedo said APD is stepping up patrols, specifically with the DWI unit.
"There is no excuse. If you get caught drunk-driving, you will be arrested, and you will face the full prosecutorial law," said Acevedo, "And if you don't submit to a breath test, we will take your blood under the no refusal initiative."
The Austin Fire Department has another reminder to keep you safe and out of trouble. AFD Assistant Chief Matt Orta reminded the public it's illegal to possess and use fireworks in Austin. Orta encourages everyone to leave fireworks to the professionals. The city's in luck--the pros will be putting on a firework show at Auditorium Shores as part of A.N.Y. The fireworks finale will cap off event celebrations at 10:30 Monday night.
Police also say if you plan to be out celebrating New Year's Eve, Capital Metro wants to be your designated driver. APD is partnering with CapMetro to offer free rides on all CapMetro services. The free rides start at 6:00 New Year's Eve night and end at 3 o'clock the morning of New Years Day.
