AUSTIN (KXAN) - The number of pedestrians killed in accidents is rising around Austin, it's more than double the number from just two years ago.

In 2010, 10 pedestrians died in traffic accidents, compared to 17 in 2011.

Then last year, the number rose again, for a total of 26 people killed.

The increases led Austin Police to start a pedestrian safety initiative last summer.

APD officers went undercover at some city crosswalks to stop drivers who did not yield to pedestrians.
