Pedestrian crashes up in Austin

APD releases list of most dangerous intersections

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police have released a list of the most dangerous intersections in the city for pedestrians.

Auto-pedestrian crashes rose sharply in 2011 citywide and there have already been 6 fatal pedestrian crashes since the start of 2012.

"Historically what we see is a lot of these crashes - the pedestrian is crossing at a location they should not be crossing especially on major highways," said Lt. Ely Reyes with the APD Highway Enforcement unit.

Police said the most dangerous intersection for pedestrian is Cesar Chavez and Congress, where there have been 8 auto-pedestrian crashes since 2011.  There have also been 8 crashes in the same amount of time at the intersection of 5th Street and Lavaca.

"I think the city has to do a better job of managing what are car areas and what are pedestrian areas where we want people to have a good time and shop," said Robert Segovia, who frequently walks in the Downtown area.

Austin police are using crash data to determine which intersections they will patrol.

"For a long time pedestrians in Austin just weren't being cited and it was kind of a free for all and enforcement was not there," said Reyes. "I think that by going out and doing these initiatives we send a message to the pedestrian and the vehicle that we are out there looking for violations and we want to do something to impact these crashes."

Rounding out the top four most dangerous intersections are Lamar and St. Johns and Congress and Woodward, each with seven crashes since 2008.

17 people were killed in auto pedestrian crashes in Austin in 2011, up from 10 fatalities in 2010.

APD has documented 128 intersections city wide that are dangerous for pedestrians - those with 3 or more accidents since 2008.
