Paramedic to run marathon in full gear
Has trained for 6 weeks carrying the heavy load

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The last six weeks of training will pay off come Sunday for one Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services paramedic.
Steven Ward will run the Austin Marathon in his uniform, carrying his radio and duty bag in honor of his former training Capt. Randy Trinkle.
Trinkle, of ATCEMS, was killed in a motor vehicle collision on Dec. 1.
Ward is an avid trail runner and has competed in distances of 50K to 60K, or 31 to 37 miles, and was featured in the December issue of Runner’s World magazine. He has been carrying his duty gear while training for the Austin Marathon for the past six weeks.
Ward will carry a radio and his paramedic primary backpack, which has been modified with a waist belt and filled with sand to replicate the weight of about 30 pounds.
Some of Ward’s friends will join him on the course at interval times to help him keep pace.
ACTEMS will have paramedics and personnel nearby at all times, keeping a close watch on Ward’s safety and wellbeing, according to Lisa Sepulveda of ACTEMS.
