AUSTIN (KXAN) - Halloween this year is going to be a "no-refusal" night in Austin

This year Halloween is going to be a "no-refusal" night in Austin. The Austin Police Department is enforcing the DWI law to keep the public safe and to conduct search warrants on suspects who refuse to give a breath or blood specimen as required by law.

Those found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or above will be charged with a Class A misdemeanor which carries a maximum sentence of one year confinement in jail and a $4,000 fine for the first time offenders.

The initiative will start at 9 p.m. Wednesday and end at 5 a.m. Thursday .

In response to large crowds expected, Sixth Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Brazos Street to the West Frontage of IH-35.Cross streets will also be closed by 6pm and vehicles parked on Sixth Street and cross streets will be towed.

Owners of vehicles towed during this time should call Southside Towing at 512-441-7094. Other closures will be dictated by crowd size to ensure pedestrian safety.

APD reminds citizens planning to be on Sixth Street on Halloween night that no weapons of any type will be allowed including:
Firearms
Relics
Swords
Illegal knives
Clubs
Sharp or pointed items

Costume accessories should be soft material of plastic. Anyone found with illegal items will be arrested and their property will be seized.
