No charges against woman who hit peds

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Police Department on Tuesday released additional details about the incident that happened on Saturday when two pedestrians were allegedly hit by a woman driving away, causing APD officer to fire shots at her car.

The investigation showed that a woman who worked at a bar on Sixth Street finished working her shift and went to her vehicle at 2:28 a.m. Her car was legally parked in the 300 block of E. Sixth Street.

Pedestrians were walking out on Sixth street, which was shut off to vehicle traffic. However, vehicles that were already in the area were allowed to stay parked and could leave when needed.

The 24-year-old woman allegedly got in her car and a crowd of up to 15 people began striking her vehicle, making her fear for her safety, police said. She attempted to leave the parking spot, which caused one person who was on her car to fall off. Additionally, she struck another person who was in the crowd, according to APD.

Police officers were standing 40-50 feet away at the intersection of Sixth and San Jacinto streets when they heard tires squealing. They turned their attention toward where the vehicle was attempting to leave.

Officer Robert Krummel, a 3-year veteran of APD, heard tires squealing. He turned around and began to approach the area where he heard the noise coming from. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed towards him. He believed that he was going to be struck by the vehicle and fired several shots at the car. The female heard the shots and stopped her car immediately, police said.

At this time, APD does not anticipate filing any charges against the driver of the car. However, once the investigation is complete it will be presented to the Travis County Grand Jury.
