New road to connect F1 track and SH 71

Officials approved $48.7 million four-lane street

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Travis County commissioners approved amending their traffic plan to include a new four-lane road that would pass by the eastern side of the Formula One track.

According to city commissioners the project, which would widen Elroy Road and expand it to State Highway 71 , would cost an estimated $48.7 million.

The new road, which would be called Maha Loop Road creates a major artery for race day traffic to get to SH 71.

Currently there is no major road outside of SH 130 that connects FM 812 and SH 71.

Cathy Olive of the Elroy Neighborhood Association is against changing the name of Elroy road.

The Elroy resident said in an email to Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe that some have lived on Elroy Road for generations and that the name change would create unnecessary cost to change the street signs.

She said that she plans to get Elroy residents to petition the motion so the road remains Elroy Road, not Maha Loop Road.
