AUSTIN (KXAN) - A new toll road will open on Saturday with hopes of alleviating one of Austin’s most notorious traffic headaches.
The opening of Manor Expressway Phase I is just a small portion of the $426.5 million project that began in 2010.
The stretch of U.S. Highway 290 between U.S. Highway 183 and Springdale Road will open Saturday, while the remaining stretch of highway leading to Manor will not be completed until 2014.
Adam Wulf regularly traveled highway U.S. 290 while living in Manor and said something was needed to help the congestion.
“It will help traffic,” said Wulf. “It gets real bad on 290. It takes 45 minutes to get to 183."
Tolls will not be collected in December as riders can give the new expressway a free try, but it will cost drivers 50 cents starting in January.
