AUSTIN (KXAN) - National Vegetarian Week started in the United Kingdom but is catching on worldwide.
Wheatsville Food Co-op officials took KXAN News on a tour of all its meat alternatives, savory snacks like the popcorn tofu, dairy substitutes made with coconut milk, and even summer grilling ideas.
Brand manager Raquel Dadomo said the products are expanding as the demand for more vegetarian options grows.
"The nutritional value in some areas is a little bit less in protein," said Dadomo. "So, generally, you just want to make sure you're getting enough protein in your diet. Read the labels really carefully, and try and supplement with other grains, such as quinoa which is high in protein."
In honor of National Vegetarian Week, Chef Jesus Mendoza from Mr. Natural joined KXAN News Today to talk about cooking for vegetarians.
