AUSTIN (KXAN) - In just two weeks, thousands from around the world will converge on Austin to attend the first U.S. Formula One Grand Prix race at Circuit of The Americas , and many of them will need transportation.
After discussion with ground transportation stakeholders, Austin City Council on Thursday passed an ordinance that will allow issuance of temporary permits for up to 16 days so additional cabs or limousines can operate in the city during times of major special events.
At issue was the increased transportation demand during F1 weekend -- as well as other large-scale events in the city -- up against concerns of not diluting the pool for those cab companies whose drivers were worried about losing income if many more cabs were allowed to operate in Austin.
The new ordinance approves fees for a temporary vehicle-for-hire permit -- valid from three to 16 days -- proposed by city staff:
