AUSTIN (KXAN) -
Ana Casares has been living with migraines since she was 18. She says sometimes the migraines would be so intense she would end up in the hospital several times a year.

"You can't go out anywhere. You can't be anywhere other than a dark room, no noise," said Casares. "So being a mother of three children that's pretty devastating, especially to the kids."

But the debilitating headaches disappeared after trying a new surgery her friends told her about. She was in and out within a day.

" I felt like total clarity," said Casares. "It's like I've been in a fog for years and years, and when I woke up after surgery, I was like, this is the most amazing feeling."

Dr. Adam Weinfeld of Austin performed the breakthrough surgery on Ana, which involved making a small incision in the back of head that relieved some stress in some nerves believed to be causing her migraines. He says all patients are different and not all patients will see results like Ana's.

"There's a whole spectrum of results that patients can achieve," said Weinfeld. "Between 80 and 90 percent of the patients do have a really significant improvement."

Ana says the surgery changed her whole life. She says she hasn't had a migraine since her surgery last December and looks forward to a new year that won't be full of disappointments to her kids.
