MetroRail weekend ridership is 'strong'

More than 1,400 boardings on Saturday evening

AUSTIN (KXAN) - With the first weekend of extended MetroRail service under their belt, Capital Metro is happy with the number of riders who decided to jump onboard.

On Friday, they had more than 2,600 boardings (which includes the daytime service and the extended hours) and another 1,400 on Saturday (from 4 p.m. until midnight).

According to Capital Metro, on routine Fridays, MetroRail usually averages about 1,700 trips; so almost 1,000 trips can be attributed to the evening service -- which is on par with what they were anticipating.

“Ridership for both days is a strong start and we believe it will grow as word spreads and our larger marketing campaign gears up the first week in April,” said Linda Watson, CapMetro president.

The trains will run every hour on Friday evenings between 7 p.m. and midnight. Saturdays, it's every 35 minutes from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Right now, the plan is to offer this service for the next 34 months.
