AUSTIN (KXAN) - Proponents of gay marriage gathered at Austin City Hall Sunday and marched to the Texas Capitol to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Texans.
The group, GetEQUAL Texas, hopes to garner support for equal rights under state and federal laws and chose to meet while the Legislature is in session.
Several bills have been filed this session in both houses of the state legislature that could greatly impact the lives of LGBT Texans.
"Now is the time to act. We have less than 80 days left in this legislative session and we have a real chance to affect positive change in the Lone Star State," said Tiffani Bishop, Central Region Lead Organizer for GetEQUAL.
Legislators will mull over bills filed for employment non-discrimination, marriage, insurance, supplemental birth certificates for adopted children.
Another bill to be discussed, creating a standard process for changing gender markers.
"We must lift our voices in unison and let our lawmakers know that we are not going to go anywhere anytime soon. We will march rain or shine. And we'll be back if these bills don't pass," said Bishop.
Organizers said they expected at least 500 to attend the march in support of equal rights for the LGBT community.
