AUSTIN (KXAN) - Hosting more than 20,000 runners for the Livestrong Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K is causing headaches for drivers thanks to road blocks, but its a boon for local business owners.

According to the Chamber of Commerce, Austin has brought in about $4.5 in revenues every year since the event began in 1992.  That adds up to $90 million.

"We are selling 500 pairs of shoes in a day," said David Bolton, manager at RunTex off Riverside Drive.

Many runners made purchases at his store over the past three days either because they forgot a necessity at home or simply wanted to pick up more running gear.

Some of the running shoes are even sold out.

"We always expect a lot of business and we always get a lot of business.  There are runners from Texas and out-of-state," Bolton added.

Of the 20,000 runners, an estimated 75 percent are from out-of-town.

Those trying to book a hotel will find that seven closest to the Congress Avenue finish line are booked.

Kristie Long, a teacher from Houston, booked her hotel room three weeks ago.  She is spending two nights at her hotel of Interstate 35.

"It isn't that bad," replied Long when asked if her hotel is flooded with runners.  "I only saw one runner in the lobby this morning."

Long browsed the racks at RunTex and is spending her evening back at her hotel relaxing.  She will drive back to Houston Monday morning.

"So, far, I have spent about $35," Long explained of her purchases so far.

That amount does not take into account paying for her hotel.

While in town, Long dined at Chuy's and picked up some java at Coffee Bean.

"Saw a lot of runners there," she explained.

Outside of some restaurants like 24 Diner on Lamar, lines formed early to snag a table.  Some people were seen waiting for at least 30 minutes.
