AUSTIN (KXAN) - The man who died while competing in Sunday's “Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon” near San Francisco was identified Monday as Ross Herbert Ehlinger, 46, an Austin attorney.

Ehlinger, who worked at the law firm of Ehlinger & Deaderick,  apparently suffered a heart attack during the 1.5-mile swimming leg of the race. The swimming leg goes from the famed Alcatraz Island to the shores of the St. Francis Yacht Club, an 18-mile bike ride, and an 8-mile run through San Francisco's Golden Gate Recreational Area.

A web search showed that Ehlinger had competed in several triathlons in recent years, including the Alcatraz races in 2008 and 2010.

According to the Texas Bar Association's website, Ehlinger's practice area included consumer and insurance litigation. He earned his law degree from St. Mary's University in 1992.

Ehlinger was named a "Super Lawyer" in 2004, which means he attained "a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement," according to Super Lawyer's website.
