Man charged for illegal gun at Saxet show

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police have filed charges against a man who tried to illegally sell a shotgun at December’s Saxet Gun Show.

The charges come on the heels of Travis County Commissioner’s recent discussion and eventual decision against ending their relationship with Saxet.

According to an arrest warrant, a 19-year-old man walked into the gun show with the shotgun on December 15th.

When an off-duty APD officer providing security for Saxet questioned the man about the gun, he did not know the specifics about the firearm, the value, or for how much he intended to sell the item.

That raised the suspicion of the officer who had worked previous gun shows.

The arrest warrant says officers observed the man selling the gun to another man at a dealer’s table. When they followed up with the buyer, he told officers he purchased the gun for $575.

Officers asked to run a check of the gun’s serial number and received results that led them to believe the gun was stolen.

The 19-year-old was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon due to three previous burglary convictions which prohibit him from owning a gun.

A background check was not legally required for the transaction between the suspect and buyer since it was a person-to-person transaction not involving a licensed buyer.

Saxet Gun Show organizers declined to talk to KXAN.

Their next show will take place this weekend at the Travis County Expo Center.
