AUSTIN (KXAN) - A Liberty Hill man who was described as being drunk and abusive is charged with assaulting a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper during an after-dark visit to the State Capitol grounds last week.

The trooper said in an arrested warrant affidavit filed Monday that he saw 37-year-old Rowdy Reah McBeath was stumbling around the grounds at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. According to the document, McBeath was walking away from one trooper when the second trooper approached him.

The second trooper said the man smelled of alcohol and was abusive. As the trooper attempted to place him in hand restraints, McBeath flailed his arms and hit the trooper in the head.

Fellow troopers came to help subdue McBeath, according to the affidavit.

McBeath was arrested on a charge of assaulting a peace officer, which is a third-degree felony. His bail was set at $5,000.
